Hostile Waters
by Peter Huchthausen, Igor Kurdin, & R. Alan White

This book chronicles an accident aboard a Russian Kilo class sub. In 1986, the Russian military was becoming a junkyard as the arms race was bankrupting their country. The K-219 set out with chronic problems that would finally cause her demise. The disturbing part of the incident was that it was off the American coast, well within range of the missiles they were carrying. The decisive actions taken by the Russian sub’s captain (Kurdin) averted an international event and a nuclear catastrophe. A very good read for those interested in the sub service and in international policy as well.
